R17 - Climata: Capturing Change at a Time of Ecological Crisis

Developed with sound artist Lasse-Marc Riek, Goethe Institut Norway, Notam and Norsk Teknisk Museum

Spring 2020 - Summer 2021

How much attention do you pay to surrounding soundscapes? Sound can both affect the world we inhabit and inform us about it.

German sound artist Lasse-Marc Riek uses field recording to explore acoustic ecology, bio-acoustics and soundscapes. PRAKSIS’s 17th residency Climata takes its starting point from questions he addresses in his practice. They include:

  • What can sound tell us about how the world is changing and our future?

  • What effects are human-generated soundscapes having on biodiversity and climate?

  • In what ways can ecological change be represented to instigate meaningful change?

This open call invites applications from artists, musicians, poets, scientists and others with an interest in ecology and sound, and a desire to explore these and related questions. Eight places are available, and applications are welcome from residents of Oslo, Norwegian nationals, and international candidates.

PRAKSIS will carbon offset residents’ journeys to and from Oslo while noting the climate consequences of travel. The residency will invite participants to evaluate the residency’s balance of social and cultural gains against climate costs, and decide on appropriate points for action. One tool you may wish to use to consider the impact of your journey is myclimate.org.

Working with Norsk Teknisk Museum (The National Museum of Technology)

The Norsk Teknisk Museum fosters understanding and debate about technology, industry, science and medicine. PRAKSIS and NTM’s forthcoming programmes share a focus on climate change and possible futures. During 2020 they will work together to maximise synergies between their programmes, exploring possibilities for PRAKSIS residency study of NTM collections, conversations with NTM's specialist staff, and exhibits or events in its galleries.

Events and Outputs

Climata - A hub for sound and ecology is a projected open-access database of field sound recordings relating to environment. The hub is intended to be global, flexible and responsive, and its range of formats and content will develop over time in response to community suggestions.

We hope you will enjoy listening to its recordings from around the globe, and we also actively welcome your contributions: your own sound recordings can be included by following the simple instructions that introduce each section of the hub.
