e for emergence – Reading Group: Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor

  • PRAKSIS 2nd floor, Rådhusgata 19 Oslo, 0158 Norway (map)

e for emergence invites you to join a reading group on ecocriticism and the narratives that shape our understanding of climate change, fossil fuels, and coloniality.

Meeting monthly, the group will explore texts at the intersection of science, sociology, politics and the arts. It will dig into the complex relationships between humans, the things we experience as nature, and the direct or indirect violence we inflict on ecosystems (including, by extension, each other).

e for emergence’s first reading group will discuss the introduction (pp. 1–44) to Rob Nixon’s Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor (2011). Nixon’s landmark work in the environmental humanities introduces the concept of "slow violence"—a form of violence that is incremental, invisible, and often overlooked in traditional narratives of catastrophe.

Artists Susanne M. Winterling and Rajat Mondal and climate scientist Kajsa Parding will join the conversation and reflect on the resonances of Nixon’s framework across many disciplines.

e for emergence is a series of art and science dialogues convened by Anita Akbarzadeh Solbu and Susanne M. Winterling. It is held as part of PRAKSIS Hosts, a new initiative supporting artists and organisers seeking to create dialogue and build community.
