As the global tourism industry continues to expand, solutions to its impacts on environment, cultural authenticity and community wellbeing are urgently needed. Artists and architects have a key role to play in the search for answers.
Reimagining Tourism is a two-day conference exploring the ways that artists, architects and heritage experts can help tourism serve local communities better. Part of PRAKSIS’s long term project An Urgent Situation: Rethinking tourism through art, architecture and community, the event is a collaboration with the Lusaka Contemporary Art Centre, Balinese hotel and culture hub Samong Haven and Oslo-based architect Don Lawrence.
Focusing on the situation in Zambia, this international gathering brings together a dynamic lineup of artists, architects, policy makers, tourism experts and museum leaders from Zambia and around the world to explore creative routes towards a more ethical and inclusive tourism industry.
Reimagining Tourism is supported by an award from the Nordic Culture Fund’s Globus programme.
Key topics include:
How is tourism impacting the evolution of Zambian culture and identity?
How can tourism policies address the long-term needs of local communities?
What role can art, design, and the living practices of heritage play in the design and implementation of sustainable tourism models?
